Due to the oiled surface mafi floors are able to absorb the moisture that occurs in the bathroom and dispense this again during the drying process. This has a positive effect on the climate in the room. The water that drips onto the floor when people leave the shower or bathtub poses no problem at all for a mafi floor. Large pools of water on the floor should however be mopped up. To ensure that the mafi floor remains permanently natural and brilliant and flawless despite sporadic splashes of water, regular care with adequate products is a must.
The right choice of wood
Care must be taken in the selection of wood as not every type of wood is suitable for use in bathrooms. Beech, for example, is one of the types of wood that shrink and swell considerably in damp surroundings. This is what is also known as ‛the wood’s expansion and contraction’. An exception is heat-treated beech wood as this process changes the shrinkage properties of the wood and increases its resistance to moisture. Larch and oak both react ideally to moisture and are naturally suited for use in wet rooms. One more insider tip: floors in bathrooms should be glued with elastic adhesive. The joint with the wall is also very important. This should be made using parquet joint sealing compound to prevent the build-up of moisture behind the wood.
Fresco: creative appearance with massage effect Taking these aspects into consideration, mafi has developed a floor ideally suited for installation in indoor spa and bathroom areas. We are referring to the mafi Fresco line of floors. In order to really experience the quality and diversity of this floor, installation is recommended in rooms that are mainly entered barefoot. The elaborate finish of the plank surface using different mafi Fresco milling programs not only allows tired soles an invigorating massage break but at the same time provides an unusual look with waves (Fresco Duna), dots (Fresco Punkto) or diamonds (Fresco Rombo). mafi floors are used very often in Bathrooms, Wellness Areas and Spas. As long as the floor gets the possibility to dry again, it is not a problem to use it in so called wet areas. (this is why we do not recommend it directly next to a pool where water can continuously spill over)
A wonderful installation and lovely interior design was combined in the romantic Hotel Pogusch in Steierereck using the mafi Larch wide plank, brushed and natural oiled. A wonderful combination of design and natural materials ensures extraordinary wellnes and relaxing possibilities.

One of mafi’s massage effect floors is now installed in a 400 year old private house in Bavaria/GER. They used the Beech Vulcano Fresco duna not only for the floor but also for the bath tub covering. This is a very difficult installation because of the surfaces structure and the humid conditions in bathrooms. On the pictures you can see that each plank of the covering is ongoing around the edge.
Please also have a look on the perfectly done solution of the connection areas to tiles and to a 400 year old stone wall where the the floor exactly follows the shape of the natural stone wall.
Technical information to natural wooden floors in bathrooms:
The planks must be glued to the subfloor firmly with elastic adhesive. Impregnate the cut edges with mafi Wood Floor Oil so that the wood does not swell. An Expansion gap of min. 5 mm must be left at the edge – also when the join is with sanitary ware (baths, shower basins, etc…)
Subsequent treatment with the appropriate mafi Wood Floor Oil is absolutely necessary after installation. The regular care should be with mafi Wood Floor Soap. Subsequent care is carried out as required using mafi Wood Floor Soap. Please avoid pools of water on the wood’s surface and/ or soak up immediately!

He used the mafi Oak Country, brushed, white oiled for the floor in the living rooms, in the bathroom, and for the stairs.
mafi floors are very suitable for frequented rooms or areas where you often come in directly from outside, even barefoot and wet. Because of the textured surface of the floor it has very good anti-slip attributes. which provides you a very good feeling when walking on it.
(The mafi oil penetrates into the wood`s pores where it hardens. After hardening the surface is extremely hardwearing yet stays breathale and open-pore. The wood ensures a balanced moisture exchange and also a healthy room atmosphere.)

Why are mafi wooden floors suitable for wet rooms?
As mafi natural oiled wooden floors come with an “open” wooden surface the floors are able to absorb water and humidity and can release it again; the wood can breathe.
The reason for that is simple but effective: the oil does not coat the floor on the top like lacquer or varnish do, but it is going inside the wood and is therefore protecting the whole top layer against water, humidity, stains, scratches and tracks of daily use. In comparison, lacquer is not able to protect the wood against humidity and water as soon as the coat has a little damage which will definitely occur in daily use. And if the lacquer coat is slightly damaged the wood is not protected anymore.
What about the swelling and shrinking?
As mafi floors are made of 3-layer constructions of solid wood, they are more stable than any other “solid wooden single layer floors”. This stableness reduces swelling and shrinking and keeps the floor flawless. Furthermore the thermo treated mafi collection called “Vulcano” is even more likely to be used in such conditions because of their even lesser swelling and shrinking attributes. This is founded due to the natural heat treatment (NO chemicals at all) that makes the wood structure more stable.
How to treat the floor correctly?
Of course it is important that the wood can also regenerate to keep it as marvelous as it is. To support that process it is very important to wash a mafi floor with our especially developed mafi soap. It is cleaning and refreshing the floor with oils and fats with one wash, as easy as pie. The longer you have your mafi floor and the more you wash it with mafi soap, the more resistant the floor will get against water, humidity and stains.
So how can you use mafi natural oiled wooden floors in wet rooms?
Considering the quality aspects we have very good long-term experience with mafi floors in bathrooms and wellness areas and can really recommend the floors for bathroom floorings, wall covering, ceilings and carpentries. Considering the unique feeling of walking barefoot on smooth and warm wood we can say: you will love it. One enthusiastic mafi customer even used a mafi Tigeroak as a wall covering inside the shower and still is fascinated and satisfied of the quality and the look.

The mafi Vulcano line is a special heat treated (without any chemical additives) wood which has a consistent couloring and better properties in case of swelling and shrinking. That is why it is also useable for bathrooms and other wellnes- and recreation areas.
