Sonneninsel is the name of an ambitious project that is trying to build an aftercare center for children with cancer. This place is supposed to be a refuge for children that have to handle this experience and work up the after effects of this illness. The employees of mafi decided to support this project and collected overall Euros 752,07. The mafi CEO Friedrich Fillafer doubled the sum and donated it to the Sonneninsel project. Maybe this idea is also worthy your support. Further information can be found here.

Christmas time in Austria

Posted: December 23rd, 2011 | Author: chemetsberger | Filed under: mafi inside, Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

There are a lot of traditions combined with Christmas in Austria. An important part of the festival is the right choice of the Christmas tree and its decoration. The tree is normally located in the living room and decorated with candles and “Christbaumkugeln”. The most frequent choice for a Christmas tree is the fir tree. The bigger gifts are put under the tree, the little ones sometimes even between the branches. The traditional meal is both simple and tasty. Nearly every family dishes up a typical Austrian “Würschtlsuppe”. But above all stands the wish for peace. We use this time to think about our relatives and also people who are not doing so well. Therefore, Christmas is also the time where conflicts should be forgotten – fortunately most of them are.

The tranquil mood during Christmas time is sometimes interrupted by stressed husbands that are trying to get the perfect present for their wife by skitting from shop to shop. The typical sweets at this time are specific Christmas cookies and especially “Vanillekipferl”. Of course, no matter who you ask, the cookies of their own grandmother or mother are the best in the world. Before the “Bescherung” the family members gather in front of the tree and sing some Christmas songs together – not always hitting the right notes but at least with enthusiasm and passion.

And that’s maybe the real spirit – not only for Christmas in Austria but for the Austrians themselves. We are not necessarily trying to change things , but accept the people and nature as they are and make the best out of their natural abilities. We, as mafi think this is the proper message and philosophy we want to deliver for this year’s Christmas here from Austria.
Merry Christmas!

“Adventskalender”: a sweet countdown to Christmas Eve usually with chocolate and our this year´s present for you

“Christbaumkugeln”: glitter balls in sparkling colors hanging on the Christmas tree for decoration

“Würschtlsuppe”: a traditional soup with sausages in it – not healthy but tasty

“Vanillekipferl”: little cookies in half moon form and vanilla flavour – definitely not healthy but absolutely delightful

„Bescherung“: Christmas Eve when everybody  exchanges their gifts

Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

The bathroom as an individual spa oasis

Posted: July 21st, 2011 | Author: ibuchacher | Filed under: hotels, interior design, knowledge, mafi inside, private houses | Tags: , , , , , , , , , | 1 Comment »

In times that are increasingly influenced by stress and hectic, one’s own bathroom soon becomes a personal spa oasis – a place to rest and relax. Quality materials are used in the bathroom not only as part of its exclusive furnishings but as an important element towards harmony and relaxation of the senses. The choice of floor plays a major role in this process. As manufacturer of natural wood floors from Upper Austria whose name is already established on the international lifestyle sector, mafi provides quality floors in various designs which can help to create an individual feel-good paradise.

Due to the oiled surface mafi floors are able to absorb the moisture that occurs in the bathroom and dispense this again during the drying process. This has a positive effect on the climate in the room. The water that drips onto the floor when people leave the shower or bathtub poses no problem at all for a mafi floor. Large pools of water on the floor should however be mopped up. To ensure that the mafi floor remains permanently natural and brilliant and flawless despite sporadic splashes of water, regular care with adequate products is a must.

The right choice of wood

Care must be taken in the selection of wood as not every type of wood is suitable for use in bathrooms. Beech, for example, is one of the types of wood that shrink and swell considerably in damp surroundings. This is what is also known as ‛the wood’s expansion and contraction’. An exception is heat-treated beech wood as this process changes the shrinkage properties of the wood and increases its resistance to moisture. Larch and oak both react ideally to moisture and are naturally suited for use in wet rooms. One more insider tip: floors in bathrooms should be glued with elastic adhesive. The joint with the wall is also very important. This should be made using parquet joint sealing compound to prevent the build-up of moisture behind the wood.

Fresco: creative appearance with massage effect

Taking these aspects into consideration, mafi has developed a floor ideally suited for installation in indoor spa and bathroom areas. We are referring to the mafi Fresco line of floors. In order to really experience the quality and diversity of this floor, installation is recommended in rooms that are mainly entered barefoot. The elaborate finish of the plank surface using different mafi Fresco milling programs not only allows tired soles an invigorating massage break but at the same time provides an unusual look with waves (Fresco Duna), dots (Fresco Punkto) or diamonds (Fresco Rombo). The newest Fresco designs are Fresco Anaconda and Fresco Pista.

Domino Vulcano elements

Posted: October 11th, 2010 | Author: koan | Filed under: mafi inside | Tags: , , | 1 Comment »

Domino floors combine the advantages of mafi’s Vulcano collection with modern possibilities in design. Many parts form a beautiful whole that will delight you with it’s vividness and style. Made from specially heat treated (=Vulcano) ash or larch.
Domino Vulcano elements are cut as end grain, at tight angles to the trunk. The small blocks (40 x 40mm) are held together on parquet mesh and, when glued to a standard substrate, form a particularly durable floor. Isolated stress cracks and expansion gaps (e.g. due to climatic changes) are possible in the elements and underlines the Naturalness of this unequaled floor.

Loading capacity

The mafi Domino floor in general is one of the most robust floor. Such being the case the floor is really suitable for ateliers, commercial properties, public or commercial areas or even car dealerships. It’s excellent for commercial areas where you need also a floor with a beautiful design as all the small elements create a a very special and smooth mixture of colours.

Example:
In the mafi headquarters the Domino floor is installed in the cabinet maker’s shop where we also drive with fork lifts over it.

Design:

The Domino design is very modern and versatile usable but its important to do the installation with good and with Domino floors experienced installer because of the colour differences and and the moving of wood. The particular effect of the floor is about the diversity of colour.

Availability of domino wood:

Domino floors are available in heat treated Ash Domino elements and in heat treated Larch Domino elements. The floor is delivered unfinished. The surface finish is carried out on site. That means that the installer has to make to surface brushed or sanded and has to oil the floor after installation. There are to different oils available, white and natural.

Important to know:

Installation should be carried out only by experts, under strict observation of the special instructions for installation.

mafi partnership with Klimahaus

Posted: October 11th, 2010 | Author: koan | Filed under: mafi inside | Tags: | No Comments »

mafi Italia has now a partnership with Klimahaus. The certificate was handed over by the director of KlimaHaus Norbert Lantschner to Nicola Paquardini director of mafi Italia srl.

mafi Italia has already done two KlimaHaus projects in South Tirol with mafi wood. mafi conforms exactly the philosophy from KlimaHaus for green and innovative buildings.

ClimateHouse

“KlimaHaus/ClimateHouse/CasaClima” is a term developed to describe energy-saving construction and dynamic living. In a time when oil and gas reserves are being depleted, economic factors are increasingly important in building and renovation.

“I’m very happy that we are into this partnership now. KlimaHaus and mafi will strongly work together with natural products and healthiness for people.” Nicola Pasquardini, mafi Italia srl

There are at least seven reasons to consider KlimaHaus construction. A KlimaHaus building is energy-conscious, comfortable, environmentally friendly and health-promoting, economically profitable, free of construction  damage and enhances property values.

What makes a natural wooden floor unique?

Posted: August 2nd, 2010 | Author: koan | Filed under: knowledge, mafi inside | Tags: , | 3 Comments »

Colour-diversity with mafi natural wooden floors.

The conservation of natural resources is an essential part of the mafi philosophy“, means Florian Fillafer member of the board.

The natural colour of wood is influenced by the climatic environment of the tree. Seasons, altitude, weather conditions and the culture medium of the soil where the tree grows influences the appearance of the wood.
Depending on the type of wood, the age of the tree when harvested is 100 – 200 years. To ensure a sustainable use of natural resources, the wood is therefore always harvested in different growing regions.
mafi insists on colour diversity and not on uniformity. Colour differences are individual characteristics and distinguish an exclusive natural product to uniformed mass produced products. These characteristics are not separated out but are distinctly desired.

mafi explicitly uses no tropical woods. For European wood varieties to be darkened in colour, mafi has created a procedure for themselves, which has no chemical additives. This product line is called Vulcano. Vulcano products are thermal treated and are not only superficially, but fully darkened throughout the wood. The charming naturalness of the wood, which is expressed in colour differences, branches and small inclusions, is not concealed but preserved.
Special customers look for special surfaces. Designers and architects often design their projects with certain mood and colour concepts in mind. The natural colour of the wood is what is asked for. It may be that the expectations of the architect are not entirely consistent with those of nature. Should that be the case, we recommend to our partners the use of coloured oils because they disguise natural irregularities. As the dark oil is applied on a dark wooden Vulcano background, repairs can continue to be made, provided that the repair is reworked with the same coloured oil. Because of the original dark wooden surface the walkways on the floor will be almost, to completely invisible.
